MoeCAST Episode 004 – Smily Raymaker

Ladies, Gentlemen, Furries, Tinies, Robots, Vampires, Particle Anomalies, Flexors, Sculpters, Sculpted, Newbies, and last but not least, the Oldies but the Goodies:

Phew that’s a long, incomplete list! My next guest is one of SL’s best kept secrets – Smily Raymaker. She hails from the United Kingdom, and has NEVER performed in public until she came to SL, not more than a few months ago. She is using SL as a vehicle to overcome her fear of crowds, but in my opinion, there’s no reason why she shouldn’t feel like she’s the cat’s pajamas. She has a voice of an angel and a personality to match, so don’t miss out!

Greetings from KY!

I had a great jam with Astrin last night.  Nether’s new apartment is located in this very cool part of Louisville, complete with coffee shops, diners, and tons of little privately owned businesses.  It’s nice to be in a place where you don’t see Walmarts everywhere you turn.  This visit is too short-lived.

Tonight (Tuesday the umm, 12th I think) is my gig at Ratepoint, starting at 4pm SLT.  Stop by for some fun with Circe, Ron, and the rest of the gang there!

America’s Got Gimmicks in SL

I was notified of a talent competition in SL, so I decided to enter, thinking I could perform an original track while my avatar stood there with his instruments. Maybe the visual experience isn’t very stimulating, but the audio experience would be. After all, I took the last two days out of my life to work on a KILLER audio track to perform for them. Of all the facets of SL, one would think that musical performance would constitute as a legitimate source of SL talent, right? Wrong.

Apparently they want to prevent any RL kinds of talent from entering the competition – sorry to break the news to all of you basket weavers. To me, this whole competition is only using 3 dimensions. What do i mean only? Well, we have the building axis (3D), then we have audio (another dimension all together), and video, which adds two more axes to the collection. That means they are using three out of six available dimensions from SL. This competition should be called “America’s Got Half-Assed Talent in SL.” If they wanted to make this a building and scripting competition, they should have called it that!

From this video, it looks like people are going to make their avatars do circus tricks and whatnot. There’s music playing in the background, which kind of threw me off too. Is this what they are looking for? A bunch of SL gimmicks? “I can multiply my avatar and make Flaming Moe 1-5 go get coffee at SLbucks while Moes 6-10 build a house, 11-15 make a HUD radar, and 16-3000 play SLingo.”

I was hoping this was it – this was a lucky break. I should have known better. It was too good to be true. They don’t care about promoting real, useful talent. They want to promote Second Life to draw more attention to it.

Monday – The Jazz Link

The folks at the MMAC have graciously invited me to play at their venue, The Jazz Link, weekly on Mondays @ 6pm SLT.  It’s a very cool venue – check out all the posters they have up!  Jaco Pastorius, Miles Davis, etc.  I’m in heaven!

Paisley Beebe – Poor Tips ($L)

I am closing this post.  Many of you said some great things, but I am no longer willing to discuss my, or anyone else’s, financial standpoints.  In reality, I have it good.  I have a roof over my head and people all over the world that listen and enjoy my music.

It’s a shame that certain  musical circumstances can’t happen because of money.  I wish every one of us could be millionaires, and we could travel the world constantly, broadcasting and collaborating in SL and RL.  Unfortunately most people are limited to what they know and have in front of them, and they must make due.  I’ve learned how to play keyboards and use recording programs so I could start playing my own music, and I knew I couldn’t afford to hire someone else.  There are always alternative methods, and I hope Paisley finds something that works for her.

I also hope that musicians in SL are able to see more money from it someday, somehow.  Until then, no more economical discussions for me.  I’d rather talk about music.
